Entries from an old Guest Book.
I haven't found a way to replace our old Guest Book functionality. We provided that back in the old, more innocent days of the World Wide Web. Eventually, it became too much of a process to "sanitize" the entries and delete the pornography and other advertising. I've posted an archive of it here because there are a few nuggets of information that might be useful to someone. The formatting is a bit off, but that's a sign of the page's age more than anything else.

I've been searching for information about the 1st Beach Battalion for years. Thank you for putting together this great site. I couldn't believe it when I clicked on the photo section and saw a picture of my father, Jack McManus. He was a radioman and is in the photo of the radiomen and signalmen at Fort Pierce, FL. The emotions that surfaced when I saw that picture are indescribable. I can't thank you enough. Jack McManus, Jr.

Hello Whites - I re-visit every so often. Mainly to see how the reunions went. We live in Houston, and thought briefly about driving over to meet you, and wish a Happy Reunion, but then figured that you all probably had your hands, and schedules, plenty full without any outside, drop in visitors. Hope it a a Great one. Regards, Bill Sprague - 4th Beach Battalion

Dear Sirs, was happy to find your web site! Great job! My father was a member of the 1st. Beach Battalion, also a member of the 7th. Beach Battalion . & finally Beach Battalion "B". He was a medic. His name is Barnett L. Medford [ Lucky] He is still alive & living in So. Calif. Very poor health but hanging in there. He just recently wrote down his experiences for his family. I hope all who can will do so also, as it will mean so much to your families. There is also so little info out there about their war efforts available! Anyone still able to write to him, that knew him during this time, please do so, I know he'll write you back. I was fortunate enough , last year to be able to attend the 7th. Beach Battalion's reunion in Calif. with him . It was his first & probably his last. What a great experience to be able to go with him & meet & rub elbows with such a great group of men . I will always cherich that time with them all. Please, if you can go to 1 of those reunions with your Dad, You won't ever forget it!!! His address is Lucky Medford 15731 Poinsettia Way Westminster, Calif. 92683 Thanks for letting me use so much space GOD BLESS YOU ALL, & GOD BLESS AMERICA

This is an insightful piece of history. As a young person these days, I overwhelmed by what the men and women who were my age fifty plus years ago did. What else can I say besides...Thank You, I appreciate it. Sometimes I feel that life is easier now days for us young people. It's true.....the sacrifices of these men have allowed me to live easier. I worry more about pimples than I do war. Thank you.

Thanks for a GREAT resource! My dad (James W Cooper) passed away back in 1980 and my research on his history has been slow. However, I recently obtained copies of his personnel file and discovered that he was assigned to the Amphibious Force Training Base in Little Creek, VA and went from there to Ft Pierce, FL. Finally, he ended up with the 1st Beach Battalion in Mar of '43. Any additional information and/or copies of photos would be greatly appreciated. I have some copies (electronic) of some photos that he had saved that I will forward to vtrbwhite@comcast.net. (Any feedback that can be provided about them would also be appreciated.)

Again, thanks for a great site!

Thank God for this site. My Father was in the 5th Beach Battalion. He trained at Fort Pierce Fla. He was then sent to APA-56 USS Leedstown. After more training they were sent to the Pacific. He was trained with the 03-Springfield, His job on the ship was Gunners Mate. He earned  six Battle Stars for invasions in the Pacific. His first invasion was Kwajalein. His second invasion was Guam. His third invasion was Peleliu. His fourth invasion was Leyte Island in the Philippines. His fifth invasion was at Lingayen Gulf , Luzon, Philippines. His last invasion was Iwo Jima. My Father and I were very close. He passed away in 91. The amount of combat he was in, being in the first wave of these invasions is hard to understand. My Father was always my Hero, and will be for the rest of my life. I welcome any E- mail about any Beach Battalions.
Thank You for this site.

Hello: What a great site. I have been researching my father-in-law's naval service in WWII to get some history and background for his grandchildren. It seems he never did talk much about his service so the family did not know much. However, with sites like this one we have been able to get an idea of what he and all the others went through. My father-in-law was on the USS Joseph Hewes and the USS Underhill when they were sank. The information on this site and others are so helpful and I could read them for hours. Thank You for all your work and dedication. It is an honor to read these pages. In appreciation and respect, CM Sheridan, WY

I would like to thank M David Jester who, with the rest of his family and business staff, hosted the affair for his father David who was slightly incapacitated due to a recent stroke. I'm the daughter of the "Lt. McDavid" mentioned on p. 39 of the book. He was John R. "Roy" McDavid of Columbia, S.C., who died in 1991. I grew up hearing stories about his war time service in all the landings except Normandy. Having always been very proud of my father, I'm very happy to find this mention on the website.

Hi, I've been searching all over hell for information on my father's unit during world war two in the Pacific. He was a member of the GRO PAC division (Naval ground forces, Pacific). He was a Chief Carpenter's Mate who repaired landing craft after an assault. I've looked all over the internet, but can't seem to find out anything about them. Do you happen to know anything about the GRO PAC division? Are they the same as the Beach Battalion? My Dad is turning 83 in September, and I'm trying to put together a display of his medals and insignia from the war. I've asked him a few questions, but I'm trying to do this as a surprise. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Tom Storey (626) 445-3750 or surfndj@aol.com

Your website looks great. The current form of the Beach Battalion's are the Beachmasters. The East Coast version is located in Norfolk, Va on the Little Creek base. We had a copy of your book that I think someone dropped off to us during your reunion this year, but I didn't hear how to get more copies, it is really a well put together piece of work. If more are available please let me know how to obtain them. Here is my e-mail, I am the Senior Enlisted Advisor here at Beachmaster Unit TWO. rlester@BMU2.navy.mil

The Robert White narrative is fascinating. I wasn't with the beach battalions, but I saw some of their people on the job at Gela and Licata in Sicily and, a bit later, at Salerno. I was a radioman in another all-but-unknown arm of the Navy, the Armed Guard, and was on board a Liberty Ship, the Alexander Martin, delivering men and material to those long-ago beaches. Thanks, Bob, for the memories. Fran Kent in L.A. (fkent12252@aol.com)

I found on the "internet" that before the middle of July 1942 the amphibious base at Little Creek Va. was a bean field. I was stationed there July 31,1942. It was a "tent city". I have not been able to convince people that the navy had conditions like that. Is there any proof of this available?

This is great! My name is Joanne Jeffries-Johnson and my Dad was Harvey P. Jeffries. Since I am only 42 at this time, I do not remember the details like my older siblings--but I will forward this site to them. We do have some great pictures that I will try to send soon. Our Dad would have been one of the younger guys because he volunteered when he was only 17. He was medically discharged in 1945 due to an injury he received on deck the USS Charles Carroll. He gradually was totally blind due to the injury. He died Oct. 19, 1986 due to a heart attack. He never received a Purple Heart, but we believe he earned one. We are pursuing trying to get one now--even after his death. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Joanne Jeffries-Johnson

Was the remainder of the history by Vey, et al ever located? Before he passed, were you able to inquire as to the location of the originals of the photos?

Rolling what your Dad has done and stories of others coming forward, along with the original book, into a new edition might be a good idea... I am a rank amateur at the writing game, but could suggest some ideas for you to self-publish, if you're interested.

Greetings, I hope that you may be able to help me. I am looking for information on the demolition units (NCDU 9 and !) under Lt. Allen and Lt. Jacobs) that presumably went into Salerno well after the invasion - probable October 1943 to do clean up work. I have spent years looking for reports of their work at the National Archives and only recently have begun to seek out members of BB. No luck so far. I have not found any one in the 1st BB whom I might write. If you have any names/addresses from the 1st would you please send them. I know the NCDU were involved also at Anzio and again may have been attached to a BB. Again I would like to find someone who recalls NCDUs participation (I have info on Normandy but just lack these two invasions) Thank you.

Dear Site... My father was Everett Lee Jones...1st BB, born 1925 in KS and now buried at Rock Island, Il. arsenal. I have been in touch with a member of this site in 2002?..i am Daniel Paul Jones, formally from Madison, Wi. where my dad took radio-man school for the navy...vs.-northwestern, Il. I sent some copies of my dad's beach party diplomas and have a lot of original beach photos from morocco, N. Africa, Sicily, Anzio, and S. France. I don't remember the gentleman's name who e-mailed me back,... I have moved to the Marshall Islands since then, and I can't get to my paperwork storage unit. My father passed away in 1984, and I have missed him very much!...he was "larger than life"...always told me stories of his navy experience...some good....others the way life is! I would dearly love to hear from anyone who might have served with him....although I realize many are not around now. A "very proud son",

He was going to inter duce me to his sister when we got back, I could never get up enough nerve to call her because it was my fault he was dead. makes me sick when I think about Iwo still. if any one knows his family I would tell them the fun we had before Iwo. my e mail is oldmanriver007@netzero.com

This site is beautiful and very well done. Good job! Americans need to remember the smaller units and the functions that they performed in WWII. I am an amateur historian. I am looking for Kentuckians killed and/or served WWII with 1st Beach Battalion or any of the related services. Don dlb_pm_2004@yahoo.com

I just found your site on the web and am very pleased that you mention my father, WD Vey.  He would be very proud that his history is available to anyone who is interested.  It was truly a labor of love for him.  I just want to correct a couple of things--his middle initial is wrong on the home page (it says W.J. Vey) and he died on July 30, 1999.

I would love to know about the next reunion plans.

Thanks for keeping my dad in memory in your site.

Gail Vey Bischoff

Note from Tim: I apologize for the error! It has been corrected. Thank you for taking the time to write us and the clarification.

The site is very interesting. The web can really be a wonderful thing. In 1998 when I started a search I found much of nothing. Recently I received a letter written home by my uncle. He was S1C Herbert Stake, gunners mate on LCT 32. Lost at Anzio Beachhead Jan 1944, I believe he was supporting Operation Shingle. I got the war diaries that list him as a lost crew member when LCT 32 hit a mine. He is listed at the Sicily-Rome cemetery. I do not know if he was part of a BB but I suspect he may have been. His letter home indicates his wish that other family and friends from home did not get into the "amphibious fleet" as it was tough. I have a great photo taken New Year's Day 1944 on North Africa and one of the letters sent to my Grandmother by Gen Eisenhower (originals) . If anyone out there served with my uncle (he was one of those 17 year old volunteers who died when he was only 18), trained at Little Creek too - please email me at spamcollector@woh.rr.com. I would like to find out if he actually trained at Ft Pierce as well, since his brother, my father, lives very close by to that area.

Hello, I had last signed your guest book on 11/23/2002 and since have read more about your unit. My father was Harvey Price Jeffries. Daddy joined the Navy in July, 1942, one month after his seventeenth birthday & was discharged in March, 1945. I have an ammunition box of his, which is stamped "Handle carefully Depth Charge Pistols (1943)". I also have the treasure of four-hundred and fifty letters, post cards, and V-Mails, that he had written home, the bulk of which were mailed during 1943. I have filed them in chronological order. If anyone remembers my Dad, or has photos of him, I would love to hear from you. I greatly appreciate the sacrifices this unit made for our country.

Sincerely, Joyce M. Jeffries bookwoman@insightbb.com    New address as of 1/4/09: MsRock4Ever@comcast.net

June 25, 2005 Dear Friends ... Your web site is most interesting and brings back a flood of memories of my experiences as First Sergeant of a B-17 "Flying Fortress" Squadrion , 535th BombSq, 381st Gp(H) in England during WWII. I will never forget the sky full of our planes the morning of "D-Day (like a flood of locusts over a Kansas wheat field). Nor will I forget the pandemonium on our base (Ridgewell, England) on "V-E" day! It does not seem possible that 60 years have past, however, time has not and will not dim my memory of my buddies who were fortunate enough to return with me to the good old USA ... nor ever the memory of those who went on to their Eternal reward. Thank you for this wonderful web site and may the Good Lord bless you all. Sincerely, Charles D. (Charlie) Butts, San Antonio, Texas

I am a Vietnam vet and doing some research on my Uncle, Ljg Loris A Winn who was a member of the 1st Beach Battalion. We was in North Africa, Salerno, and Southern France. Does anyone on this site remember him. I believe he was on the second wave at Salerno at "Uncle Green" beach. Thanks

Hello Sir,

My name is Jason Nauman and I was wondering if you could help me.  My grandfather passed away before I was born and I am trying to find out more about him.  In February I received some pictures of him.  He wrote on the back of one of the pictures 3rd Beach Battalion, Wales.  I know the picture was taken during WWII, that is where he met and married my grandmother.  I am trying to find out more information about him and to see if I can locate anyone that might have served with him.  My grandfather's name is Richard Schill and he was from Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Jason G. Nauman

Dear Mr. White,

I hope you are doing well and that you & your family had a Blessed Christmas.

I am the daughter of Harvey Price Jeffries, who served in the First Naval Beach Battalion. I'm attaching a photo of my Dad that was taken in 1943. My four siblings and I appreciate your website very much. Anyone from your unit is invited to contact our family at any time.

One of my sisters, Joanne Jeffries Johnson, had signed your Guest Book several years ago.
Two of my other siblings may be reached with the following e-mail addresses:
Jon D. Jeffries opd312@sbcglobal.net
Janna Jeffries Anderson moonwtchr@gmail.com

I had also signed your Guest Book on 11-23-2002 and again on 3-23-2005. Since that time, my e-mail address has changed, so I wanted to give you my new e-mail address in case anyone might try to reach us. (see Below).
I'm also attaching a copy of the last post I made to your Guest Book in 2005.

I'm so sorry for you that people will abuse a site to the point that the features have to be disabled, it seems to be the way of the world these days, it sickens me to see the lack of respect, especially for our beloved veterans.

May all of you be blessed with a safe, happy, healthy and prosperous New Year 2009!!

Sincerely,
Joyce M. Jeffries
